What makes leadership sustainable?

I bring a different perspective to sustainable leadership; connecting identity, physiology, organisational systems and the realities of carrying responsibility.

Organisations ask a great deal of the people carrying leadership responsibility, complex decisions and sustained professional demands.

Sustainable leadership requires more than the ability to keep going.

It depends on the capacity to think clearly, respond well, recover effectively and remain connected to who you are beyond the demands of the role. Physiology, identity and organisational systems all shape that capacity.

WHO I WORK WITH

I work with organisations and leaders operating in environments where responsibility is significant, decisions have consequences, and sustaining the people who carry that responsibility matters.

SENIOR LEADERSHIP TEAMS

Leaders carrying complex organisational responsibility, competing demands and decisions that affect people, performance and outcomes.

PEOPLE, CULTURE & HR

Teams shaping leadership capability, organisational culture and the conditions that enable people to lead and perform sustainably.

WHS & WELLBEING LEADERS

Professionals seeking a more integrated understanding of the relationship between physiology, leadership capacity, organisational systems and sustainable performance.

PROFESSIONAL & INDUSTRY BODIES

Associations, conferences and professional communities looking for intelligent, evidence-informed conversations about leadership, identity and human performance.

THE CONTEXT FOR LEADERSHIP HAS CHANGED

The demands surrounding leadership have become increasingly complex.

Alongside performance and organisational responsibility sit growing questions about psychological health, capacity and what enables people to continue leading well over time.

50%

of Australian workers experience significant stress

Gallup 2025

34%

of Australian employees report annual employee turnover of 20% or more in early 2025

AHRI 2025

123%

increase in the rate of serious mental-stress workers' compensation claims over the past decade.

SAFE WORK Australia 2025

These figures point to something more complex than a wellbeing problem. Leadership can be meaningful, engaging and rewarding while still placing significant demands on the person carrying the responsibility.

A PERSPECTIVE BUILT FROM BOTH SIDES OF THE SYSTEM

My understanding of sustainable leadership has been shaped from multiple sides of organisational life - as a senior leader, a first responder, a scientist and clinician, and ultimately as someone who experienced an organisational system from the other side.

LEADERSHIP

Leadership and Performance

More than two decades in senior educational leadership, with responsibility spanning people and performance, HR, WHS, organisational change, complex decision-making and organisational outcomes.

OPERATIONS

Organisational Pressure

Eight years as a volunteer first responder with Surf Life Saving South Australia and the State Jet Boat Rescue Crew, where regulation, teamwork and decision-making under pressure were operational realities.

THEORY

Science and Clinical Practice

Thirty years of scientific foundations, from Applied Biological Sciences and science education to Clinical Nutrition, Yoga Therapy and contemporary understanding of human physiology and regulation.

SYSTEMS

Lived System Experience

Personal experience of workplace injury and the workers compensation system following an assault at work - bringing an understanding of what organisational systems can look like from the other side.

Sustainable leadership requires us to understand not only the role, but the person carrying it and the system surrounding them.

HOW I WORK WITH ORGANISATIONS

There is no single format for this conversation.

Engagements are shaped around the audience, organisational context and what you are seeking to achieve.

SPEAK

KEYNOTES AND CONFERENCES

Engaging, evidence-informed presentations that challenge conventional thinking about identity, leadership, human performance and the relationship between people and the systems in which they work.

For conferences, leadership teams, professional associations and organisational events.

DEVELOP

LEADERSHIP WORKSHOPS

Half-day and full-day facilitated experiences that take the conversation beyond the keynote and into reflection, discussion and practical application.

Designed around the particular needs, pressures and context of your leaders and organisation.

ADVISE

ORGANISATIONAL ADVISORY

Targeted or longer-term advisory engagements exploring sustainable leadership, human performance, identity and organisational capacity.

For organisations seeking more than a one-off intervention and wanting to examine the conditions that shape how people lead, perform and remain well over time.

PRIVATE LEADERSHIP MENTORING

Individual support is also available for senior leaders navigating the intersection of professional identity, responsibility, performance and sustainable capacity through my Aligned Reset Method™.

SIGNATURE CONVERSATIONS

My speaking and workshop topics can be adapted to the organisation, audience and context.

WHEN THE ROLE BECOMES YOU

Identity, Leadership and What Happens When the Structure Falls Away

What happens when professional identity becomes inseparable from personal identity - and what does that mean for leadership, transition and life beyond the role?

THE SUSTAINABLE LEADER

Performance, Capacity and Leading for the Long Term

A different examination of what allows leaders to carry significant responsibility without treating their own capacity as an unlimited organisational resource.

WHAT THE BODY KNOWS

What Physiology Can Teach Us About Performance, Pressure and Recovery

An evidence-informed exploration of what happens beneath the surface when people operate under sustained demand - and why understanding physiology changes the conversation about performance.

SYSTEMS AND THE PEOPLE INSIDE THEM

Why Human Performance Cannot Be Separated From Organisational Design

An examination of the relationship between individual capability and the systems, structures and environments in which people are expected to perform.

Meet Kersten

Kersten Stengel is an Author, Speaker, Reinvention Mentor and Leadership, Identity & Organisational Advisor.

Her perspective has been shaped by more than two decades in senior educational leadership, eight years in volunteer emergency response, thirty years of scientific foundations and later clinical training in human health and physiology.

She holds a BSc (Hons) in Applied Biological Sciences, a BHSc in Clinical Nutrition, formal qualifications in Yoga Therapy and is an ICF Coach. She also serves in tertiary education as a Clinical Supervisor mentoring undergraduates in Clinical Nutrition Practicum.

Her understanding of organisational systems is also personal. Following a workplace assault that ended her former career, Kersten experienced the workers compensation system from the other side - an experience that fundamentally changed how she thinks about leadership, responsibility, identity and the relationship between organisations and the people inside them.

Her forthcoming memoir, Broken by the System. Rebuilt by My Soul., explores that experience and the decade of reconstruction that followed.

What she brings to organisations is not one disciplinary lens, but the ability to connect leadership, science, physiology, identity and lived system experience in ways that create different conversations about people and performance.

WHEN THE CONVERSATION NEEDS TO GO FURTHER

For organisations seeking broader workforce programmes encompassing psychosocial risk, workforce sustainability, injury management and workplace menopause literacy, I work in partnership with Accredited Exercise Physiologist, workplace injury and menopause specialist Clio Austin.

Clio brings more than two decades of employer-side injury management and corporate wellbeing experience. Together, our combined perspective connects clinical physiology with organisational risk practice.

We operate as Stengel & Austin Consulting. Find out more on our webpage by clicking the link below.

LET'S START WITH A CONVERSATION

Whether you are considering a keynote, leadership development or a broader advisory engagement, I begin by understanding your organisation, your people and what you are seeking to achieve.

30 minutes. A useful first conversation about where you are now and what may be possible.

WHAT BECOMES POSSIBLE?

When people have the capacity to perform well,
organisations have the capacity to do the same.
